Godwin Tom Sunday, also known as GTS, is a painter who luckily had parents who encouraged his interest in art quite early.
Godwin attended Federal Government College, Otobi, where he met Mr. Ijiga who taught him Fine Art and exposed him to art. Mr. Ijiga became his mentor and encouraged him to pursue art as a course of study. “After that, I proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and graduated in 2011 with a B. A. in Painting. During my internship, I trained under artists like Dr. John Oyedemi, Dr. Wale Ajayi, Dr. Emma Irokha and Dr. Blaise Gundu Gbaden at ABU Zaria.”
“I work with oil paint on canvas and others artistic materials to produce portraits that merge inner states with outer appearances. Often working at a grand scale, I create vigorously executed images of human figures, heads and faces using a multicolored patchwork of strokes. In some compositions, my strokes obscure my figures, whose contours can barely be made out amid the pigment. In others, faces and forms are more clearly articulated.”
“I am an artist whose works are inspired by daily activities around me and contemporary Nigerian issues, but with more thematic focus on female projection in the society. I render my works in stylized naturalism and realism using impasto style of painting. Some of the titles of my works include; The bride, the missing Mirror, water everywhere yet no water, The child, we shall rise above all rubble, One Love One Nation, a fight over supremacy et al.”
