Meet Olayinka – The Creator of Zoomabar Granola Bar


Olayinka Zainab Obagun is also called ZOOMA by friends and family or Yinksho by her university friends. Olayinka makes Granola Bars, called Zoomabar, that are yummy, healthy and good for you.

The need to have a great alternative foreign-made granola bars drove her to start the business. “I was looking for an alternative to foreign-made granola bars and I couldn’t find anything. Now, a lot of people make granola but granola bars were actually scarce. I found a couple but they didn’t have anything substantial in them. I wanted something healthy but yummy.”

“There was just one small tiny minute problem. I had never ever baked before, like never. So I pleaded with Moji Aina (@mogeemagic) to teach me. I think Moji knew I would back out so she bought all the ingredients needed to make the first batch and told me to customise it and make it mine.”

“I kept practicing until I arrived at a recipe I was happy with. I have to thank my friends and family for willingly being my guinea pigs and my greatest cheerleaders. I also have to single out Mrs Adeshola Oluremi-Judah, Macpherson Nwakuoni, Tosin Faniro Dada and Esther Sonariwo, Feyisayo Alayande and Kemi Adegbite for going over and beyond for me. Modion Communications also designed an amazing logo and did the whole brand identity for Zoomabar and the parent company, Shinfield, at no cost.”

Olayinka considers challenges as opportunities to grow the business. “Without these blessings in disguise, the business remains stagnant. Zoomabar officially commenced commercial operations in April 2018. Today is the 4th of May 2018 and Zoomabar is officially stocked at 22 locations and growing.”

“For some of the places, the only way they accepted the product was through a SOR (Sale or Return aka If people don’t buy please come and pack your goods.)”

“The major hurdle I am still facing is recruiting competent sales people who can talk to people about the product. As a new product, you have to convince people in a relatively short period about your product and also try not to irritate them. It’s a delicate balance. I have a few competent people but we still require more people to help us push this yummy healthy goodness out.”

“Another challenge was when we go to a new place; we usually just spoke to the Head of Procurement there. However, that’s not very wise as the head of procurement will not sell your product. You need to know all the foot soldiers in every location. Now I am not saying you should bribe them but you have to acknowledge them. You wouldn’t have sales people in all locations and these foot soldiers are the people who will sell your product for you. This is why I say they aren’t challenges but opportunities because if you can turn these problems around your business benefits greatly.”

“Another challenge we face is the shelf life. It lasts for only 3 weeks but then gala lasts for 10 days, so we can’t complain.”

She draws her inspiration from God. “Once I embark on any project I pray and fast about it. I commit everything to God because HE ALONE works all things for my good. He is God and He can never ever fail me. Man must fail but God cannot and will not and for me, I just commit it all to the one who gave me the Idea.”

“I believe in organic growth:  starting small. Do your best knowing you have done your best possible. Be realistic. Be optimistic and pessimistic at the same time. Weigh every decision and have people you can confide in (mentors or godfathers or sounding boards).”

“Find what works for you and stay in your own lane. Don’t run someone else’s race as you will only fail. Be content but stay hungry, knowing the possibility of achieving more lies in you.”

When she was asked about a project she embarked in that made her believe in herself, she has this to say. “I wanted to get into a supermarket that has various chains in Nigeria and I honestly thought it was a done deal. Next thing they turned me down and said they weren’t interested.”

“Guess what, that’s how Zoomabar started. I went to different supermarkets and started speaking to them. That day I got into 5 supermarkets. The point is to believe in yourself, believe in your Product and most importantly Commit every single thing to God and trust God to work everything out for your good.”

Looking forward, “The dream is for Zoomabar to be something you find on a local or international flight, to be in every school, to be in every pharmacy, to be in every hospital, to be in every supermarket, to be in every gym, to be in every hotel and office cafeteria. It’s a big dream but we are getting there slowly, little by little.”

“Youth empowerment has become incredibly important, Olayinka believes.” “More and more people are starting their own businesses because they cannot rely on one source of income and so to me the most obvious way one can empower the youth is to support businesses that are considered sustainable.”

“To a large extent the Government is supporting businesses through various funds, for example The Lagos State Employment Trust Fund is an excellent fund for the youth to take advantage of.”
