Richman Joseph Umanah is Pen Artist who loves art and ICT. The 23-year-old Libra enjoys drawing and painting and describes art as a God-given talent.
Currently studying Computer Engineering at the University of Uyo, the artist says he has been drawing since Primary School.
“I remember this friend back at Port Harcourt, Pamigaye. We drew together, we sort of competed in fun but I did most of them in hiding, Dad wasn’t a big fan. Pamigaye and I even invented our own super heroes, “The Humoroes”. Actually, the characters were us in real life; everything that happened around us, the people we helped, etc. let’s say we helped an old lady carry loads, we drew it.”
“We were so creative and at that age, I would have done anything for arts; I bought lots of comics from the best at that time, Wisdom a.k.a Dede. He was so good, He specialized in comics, I was a loyal fan and customer, I would steal money from Mum & Dad just to buy his artworks. Dede was the son of an artist; I really wished my Dad was an artist.”
“I also bought supastrikas from the rich kids in school, and when I couldn’t afford it, Dede was there to draw me an issue for less, I was always the top of my class when it came to arts because I loved. There is so much to say about my art in Secondary School and how I have metamorphosed.”
“Currently my art had metamorphosed to ballpoint pen drawings, I just love it. It has taught me patience and precision. I would still get back to paintings once I have my private space. I would say that I have grown I have a lot of growing up to do as well.”
Sometimes, the external challenges like my present lack of private space, lack of good commissions, shuffling school and work, serve as an impediment. And sometimes, my own laziness but since art is my major source of income, I am getting better every day.”
“My art has personally taught me patience and I hope people can see that when they see my work. Also, I hope people are inspired to appreciate our culture more as Africans through my artworks.”
Speaking on his inspiration, Richman quoted something he wrote a while back.
creativity is my inspiration,
it’s the only hope of our planet,
it’s taking us further,
it gave birth to the pyramids,
music, war, and peace.
creativity has no limits.
over the years,
it fuels my imagination
yeah! creativity inspires me.
“even we can create a world of love, unity, peace, fairness, prosperity…
creativity is the key”
