Manchester United have been fined £20,000 (23,000 euros, $25,000) by the English Football Association after accepting a charge of failing to control their players during Monday’s feisty FA Cup quarter-final defeat at Chelsea.
United were knocked out of the FA Cup after a goal from N’Golo Kante proved to be the decider. It was a game that saw midfielder, Ander Herrera sent off in the 35th minute for a second yellow card following repeated fouls on Eden Hazard
United’s players approached referee Michael Oliver and argued with him after the decision to send Herrera off and that indiscipline has now earned the club a misconduct charge, and the standard punishment of £20,000.
A statement by the FA read: “Manchester United have been fined £20,000 after the club admitted an FA misconduct charge and accepted the standard penalty.
“It relates to a breach of FA rule E20(a) for failing to ensure its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion in or around the 35th minute of their Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea on Monday 13 March 2017.”
Herrera will miss this weekend’s game against Middlesbrough along with West Brom’s visit to Old Trafford after the international break as it was his second dismissal of the campaign. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would also be missed for both of those fixtures after he received a retrospective punishment following an elbow on Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings.
