After a dramatic Sunday night at Flushing Meadows, Stan Wawrinka finally tired out World No. 1, Novak Djokovic to win the US Open final, making it the third Grand Slam of his career.
Wawrinka, the No 3 seed, put up a resilient display to win 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 in three hours and 55 minutes .
Despite the fact that Djokovic started strongly in the tie, the sheer stamina of Wawrinka eventually tore down his Serbian opponent as the game progressed. Prior to the final, defending champion Djokovic had completed only three matches in six rounds at the US Open following a series of injury withdrawals by some of his opponents, and his lack of playing time on the court was evident as Wawrinka showed extra strength and grit.
Wawrinka now adds US Open title to his previous wins at the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open, as Djokovic is left to maul over a miserable year after the World No 1 lost to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon, and was outdone by Juan Martin Del Potro at the Olympics.
