Rafael Nadal, popularly dubbed as ‘king of the clay court’, defeated Swiss opponent Stan Wawrinka on Sunday to reclaim the French Open title after a two-year exile.
The game ended 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 as the Spaniard dominated proceedings from start to finish. In just over two hours the game was over as Nadal completed 10th French Open win in his career.
The 31-year-old former World Number one had been injury plagued for the past 3 years and hadn’t had a major title win in that time. Stan Wawrinka who had won the French Open in 2015 defeated World Number one Andy Murray in the semi-final to set up a Final match against Nadal.
‘‘I’m a little emotional, the nerves and adrenaline I feel on this court is impossible to compare’’ said an elated Rafael Nadal after the win. He now has 15 career Grand Slam titles, 32-year-old Stan missed out on becoming the oldest French Open winner sinceAndres Gimeno in 1972.
