Two goals from world record signing, Paul Pogba inspired Manchester United to a 4-1 thumping of Fenerbache in their Europa League Group A encounter on Thursday night.
The game had started flat and looked set to be another United stalemate until Fenerbache gifted the Manchester club with two cheap penalties. Pogba converted the first of both penalties in the 31st-minute before Anthony Martial scored United’s second spot kick only 3 minutes later.
Pogba looked close to his best when he fired United’s 3rd in stoppage time of the first half. United’s captain, Wayne Rooney, who had returned to the starting 11 picked out Jesse Lingard with a perfect pass in the Fenerbache box. Lingard brought the ball under control with an exquisite touch before laying the ball to the world’s most expensive player. The French midfielder then curled the ball beautifully into the top right-hand corner. Goal of the game.
After the break, another Rooney, Pogba and Lingard combination saw the young English winger grab one for himself to seal the rout.
Nigerian striker, Emmanuel Emenike was introduced for Fenerbache and his impact was immediately felt but it wasn’t until the 83rd-minute that his low cross found former Manchester United striker, Robin van Persie who turned the ball past David De Gea. His goal was met by a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd.
Manchester United are now joint top of Group A, level with Feyenoord on six points.
