A passenger (identified by the Cyprus foreign ministry as Seif Eldin Mustafa) hijacked an Egyptian plane, EgyptAir Flight MS181 which was on a scheduled route from Alexandria to Cairo on Tuesday morning. The plane veered off course and landed at Larnaca Airport in Cyprus.
No fewer than 55 passengers were on board the plane according to Egyptian authorities. All the passengers have been released but the captain and co-pilot, a female crew member, a security officer and three passengers are still being held.
It is unclear what the motive of the hijacker is but Cypriot president, Nikos Anastasiades, was quoted saying ‘It is not to do with terrorism’, but that the hijacker simply ‘demands to speak to ex-wife’
