Newcastle United grabbed an all important point against Manchester City on Tuesday night to continue their fight against the drop.
Sergio Aguero controversially opened the scoring for the Citizens with a header on 14 minutes. Replays showed the striker was clearly offside from Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick. Could this goal come back to hurt Newcastle? Vurnon Anita scored half an hour with a low curling shot to put the home side level. Saves from Magpies keeper Karl Darlow and City keeper Joe Hart ensured the tie stayed level with Benitez’s side now 2 points from 17th place but still in the drop zone.
Too late for Rafa’s Newcastle?
Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley may have waited 2 months too long to appoint Rafa Benitez as manager of the Magpies. The Spaniard has definitely added some grit to the side he inherited from Steve McClaren and with a lengthier spell, might have pulled the Magpies out of the drop zone already. They now face a race against time to ensure survival and it would be interesting to see Benitez pull a miracle with the players at his disposal come May.
