We earlier reported that The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC suspended the legislative elections in four local government areas of Rivers State, due to violence and the prevention of electoral officials from distributing election materials. Polls from two more LGAs have also been suspended making it 6 affected LGAs.
The areas where INEC suspended elections are Eleme, Khana, Gokana, Andoni, Bonny and Tai. Apart from Bonny, the remaining areas are in Rivers South East Senatorial District where Senators Magnus Abe of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Olaka Nwogu of PDP are locked in fierce contest for the senatorial seat.
According to the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Aniedi Ikoikwak, the decision to suspend the polls in the affected areas follows reported cases of violence and other hitches witnessed in those areas. At least six persons are also feared dead in election violence in three local government areas.
Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, condemned the electoral commission, stating that it was not prepared for the re-run elections in the state and that the challenges faced during the elections would have been avoided if the commission had prepared for the polls.
