Shola Sheridan Otis, also known as Otisebaba is a perfumer with Otis Fragrance.
Speaking about when she started, she says, “When I left my job about 7 years ago, I got the opportunity to market FM products (Federico Mahora – a Polish-based business that deals in perfumes). I got a lot of knowledge in training and grading of perfumes, so when the opportunity came to learn, I took it and applied the knowledge and experience I have acquired from Fm. Since then, I have learnt and improved on this knowledge through online training.”
She mentioned her challenges since she started. “The challenges I have faced so far is consistency in sourcing for bottles; you get a kind of bottle today, tomorrow you can’t find same. Even concerning oils, there is no consistency in getting some oils. Importation is not consistent.”
Shoal gets her inspiration from God and the zeal that she has to succeed. “Failure is not an option.”
The perfumer says she has believed in herself right from the beginning. “Jesus cannot fail, so why would I fail, I am joint heir with Christ.”
She also mentioned a voluntary service she is rendering beyond her business. “I belong to this NGO called the Amazing Amazon. We fight the course of children and women, we have been going to schools to sensitise the children about child sexual abuse and the findings has been devastating. For that course, it gives me the will to want to do more.”
Now, she is looking out for grants to take her business to another level and is also open for healthy collaborations.
To her, youth empowerment is the best thing for any young person. “Learning to take one’s life in one’s hand is the best, certificates alone is not the solution to poverty, learning to give solutions to challenges, and proffering solution is the easiest way to becoming a self-reliant person.”
