Meet Lasisi – The Painter

Lasisi Babatunde Damilare, also known as Zuma, is a visual artist but specifically, a painter. “I specialize in Painting; I use different mediums such as oil paints, watercolour, charcoal and conte.”

His love for art started at a very tender age. “I loved drawing a lot but I did not pay much mind to it until I gained admission to study Fine Art at The Polytechnic, Ibadan where I the passion of my colleagues influenced to pursue my talent. I started learning more about drawing and painting from them.”

The painter admitted to facing challenges since he was younger. “I wasn’t given freedom of speech/expression as required. My parents wanted me to become either Lawyer, Engineer or at least, work in a big firm but my dream/goal was different. I had always seen myself as a creative person. I never got support to study Art not until I grew older. The other challenge was financial support.”

Speaking on his source of inspiration, he says, “I draw my inspirations from the works of my masters, Mr Abiodun Olaku, Mr Joshua Nmesirionye, Mr Ejoh Wallace, Mr Bimbo Adenugba amongst others. I also study works of Susan Lyon and Rembrandt.”

“I also get inspired by what happens within and around me; my thoughts, feelings, childhood and adulthood experiences and sociological commentaries.”

The project that made him believe in himself was when he participated in a drawing workshop at OneDraw Gallery. “I had the opportunity to practice alongside great artists in the Art industry such as Mr Olusegun Adejumo, Joshua Nmesirionye, Akanimoh Umoh, Tega Akpokona. It was a great experience and ever since then I never underrate myself.”

Moving on, he looks forward to participating in Art fairs, Art Auctions and Exhibitions, locally and internationally.

“Youth empowerment,” Tunde believes, “is a great idea which will give the youths a voice and also help us develop in our various areas of specialization. The leaders should encourage the youth to use their passion for good by providing enough resources for the youth to strategize plans that can solve the national issues affecting us as a country and encourage the youth to succeed despite their limitations as well as charge their courage and support their projects.”
