Olalekan Akanni Abimbola, fondly called Bimbo Psalmz is a Musicologist – Church Music (Worship) is his core and connecting Humanity to Divinity via the instrument of songs and the word of God is his essence.
Bimbo has been into music for quite a while. His earliest major involvement was when he led his primary school Choir when they were to graduate. He ventured more seriously into what he does now which is Music Ministry in 2008, when he could really say he now understood his purpose and was ready to run with it.
According to him, he would have ended up a medical student, but upon discovering this path he decided to go study in the line of his passion and thus went to study Music as a degree in Lagos state university, and has since then been progressing as God enables him.
His very first challenge was that people thought he was out of his senses when he left Medicine for Music, having done awesomely well in UTME (JAMB) and post UTME and awaiting the admission list from his choice institution. He did sciences all his high school days, so, to sit for another UTME on subjects he had never been taught was another challenge. But he scaled through and came out with good grades, with his name being on the merit list for LASU 2009/2010 admissions.
Another challenge Bimbo had was getting people to believe in him, getting the right people to work with, getting platforms, and many others surrounding that. Finance was a major issue too. He recorded in a studio for the first time in 2012 with a producer somewhere in Dopemu, Agege, Lagos and for the second time in 2013. Both songs did not travel far or stay for so long. It was just some of his friends that listened to it and encouraged him to continue.
Bimbo’s number one source of inspiration is the Holy Spirit. His role models are Jesus and David in the Bible. He also learns and draws inspirations from great music ministers of our time.
One of the major projects he worked on was directing the National Choir of the Foursquare Students’ Fellowship nationwide (NaFFS) for about 3 years. That really opened him up to a lot of discoveries about himself and the world around.
When asked about opportunities he’s open to, Bimbo had this to say, “Trusting God for great platforms to share what God has blessed me with, my gifts of singing, writing, dancing amidst others to further reveal Him. Also trusting God for resources to organize various platforms everywhere and anywhere…ministering in songs, teaching and making Him known to all.”
Bimbo believes that youth empowerment starts from within. “Nigerian youths needs to first look within cos in there lies the greatness they seek without. Then, proceed to doing something about it.”
When this is done, he believes God has a way of helping such with the necessary empowerment needed…that could come in any form. It may be platforms, start-up capital and any other thing that could make that inbound idea or gift better.
“I’m always disturbed when all a youth thinks of is to go to the University for the sole purpose of getting a ‘well paid’ job afterwards. I think that should change. When Value is in place, getting a job, if need be, won’t be so difficult.”
