Two teams out of champions league qualification spots in their national leagues, they clashed in the semifinals in a bid to progress and gain qualification to Europe’s premier club competition by winning it.
Celta had home advantage and the game started edgy with no side really taking control. As time went on, chances were beginning to be carved on both ends.
Daniel Wass had a clear chance to put his team in front after 11 minutes after a missed interception from Bailly from a Radoja cross, but he surprisingly managed to take it off target. United had their chances to score with Lingard and Mkhitaryan missing glorious chances, Rashford had a shot saved by Sergio Alvarez who had to stretch at full length to keep it out. The teams went to halftime level with the referee even blowing seconds from time.
The second half like the first saw missed opportunities. Sergio Romero, the United backup was up to the task when called up, he made key saves and proved his selection was merited. Manchester United had a free kick in the 67th which Rashford took and scored, it was wonderfully executed although Alvarez might have to take the blame for the way he positioned his wall.
Mourinho said afterwards that the tie was still at “50-50” but if United cannot put away Celta Vigo in their current form at Old Trafford then they probably are not ready for a return to the Champions League.
Can’t disagree with that.
