Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, believes Zlatan Ibrahimovic deserves to win a Ballon d’Or award, especially if the striker ends the season on a high with another trophy.
The 35-year old Swedish striker has been instrumental for Mourinho’s men this season, scoring 26 goals in all competitions — many of which came at times when United needed them the most. The most notable of Ibrahimovic’s contributions this season, would be his brace last weekend at Wembley which won the EFL Cup for United.
Mourinho who said he cannot believe his towering striker has never won the prestigious accolade, however believes Ibrahimovic has exceeded expectations for a 35-year-old.
“I think what he has done is amazing,” Mourinho told MUTV.
“The number of goals he’s scored, the two matches at Wembley, the trophies, what he is in the group, and what he means. I think he is absolutely phenomenal. No more words.
“I just gave an interview to a big French magazine with big responsibilities in these big awards, the FIFA Golden Ball and so on. I know about Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
“I know what they are and what they are doing but I can’t believe this big man, with the career he’s having, I can’t believe he’s never won it.
“So why not this season, if he can do something special? If he can win more trophies, reach Stockholm and the Europa League final. Why not this man, who is 35 years old, to get that deserved award?” He added.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has had a stellar career across Europe’s top leagues but is yet to even be named among the top three in the voting, with Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona wizard Lionel Messi filling the top two slots for the past six years.
