Anthony Nwabueze Nwogu, also known as Homeboygino, is a freelance Web Designer/Creative Artist.
The graduate of Animal Production and Health from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomosho Oyo state has always loved art and nature.
“I had loved art as a kid. I was that kid you will always catch with a pencil scribbling random things everywhere possible, be it a wall, a table, the chairs you name it. Later on, I got discouraged by a relative saying that I shouldn’t pursue art as a profession in the future because pursuing a career as an artist is not lucrative.”
“I guess to her not making so much money as the engineers made was a failure. That perspective stuck with me for years and I just wasn’t really making art as usual even though I still drew occasionally, the fire wasn’t really burning as before.”
“A part of me still kind of held on to that creative part because I remember always going to my uncle’s office to see him and it was an advertising agency. I would watch him for hours designing on his system and I would get back home and also try to design on the PC using the paint application but was just for fun, nothing that serious.
I continued that way till I got to the university. I wanted to study Computer Science, even though my dad preferred Engineering but I was admitted for Animal Production and Health. While I was in school, a neighbour’s friend came over to the hostel I was staying and he was in the department of Fine and Applied Art. He came over with his assignments and some of his works and we were scrolling through them. Something sparked in me that day, we got talking and he invited me over to the department the next week. From that day, I started visiting the art studio in school time to time and view projects of students, get ideas and draw at my free time.
In 2012, during a 6 months strike, out of boredom, I visited YouTube and searched for a couple of art tutorials using Photoshop. I downloaded a couple and kept watching and practicing everyday throughout the strike period.”
I got caught up and continued even after the strike was called off. The feedback from friends on social media where I uploaded my works further motivated me. And despite remembering the words of my relative, I decided to commercialise my art. At first, all I got for it was airtime but I was relentless because I simply desired to create awareness.”
“Since then I have had referrals and grown. Although there were times of setbacks and hurdles but I kept on pushing, believing that was my growth process. I am still pushing on and improving myself daily to keep my generation interested.”
