Following Saturday evening’s magnitude-7.8 quake along the Pacific coast that shook Ecuador, the death toll has risen to 553 people.

Previous reports had placed the death toll at 480 before officials put the number at 525 people earlier today. However, Ecuador’s attorney general has said that 553 people were killed during the quake and even that number is still expected to rise with the U.N. humanitarian chief saying hundreds remain missing and that 21,000 people “need shelter immediately.”
