Chimaobi Okenwa, also known as Sly, is a Nigerian Contemporary Visual artist, born and raised in Lagos.
The graduate of Wisconsin International University, Accra, started his artistic journey when he was a child.
“My art journey started from my childhood when I developed a keen interest in drawing and sketching out favourite cartoon characters, portraits of friends and relations. 2015 was the year I transformed an obsession into a profession during my undergrad days in Ghana.
“Since then, I’ve hosted and participated in different art exhibitions and workshops, likes of Never Mind Art Exhibition and Exploring Cultural Boundaries Korean Cultural Center. I was also a keynote speaker at DFIX conference, a youth-driven initiative at Nigerian Airforce base, Abuja. I would say I am somewhat at the peak of my career and there is no limit to what I can achieve.”
Speaking on his art, Chimaobi has this to say, “I create as I speak; my works tell a story of a continent once revered and known as the cradle of the world civilization, but turmoil, chaos & poverty has since let Africa down an inclined plane.”
“I pass a message of hope with my art from Africa to the world at large. Just like I’m currently doing with my latest work “ABENA”, which mirrors the prevailing influence of human behaviour in our socio-cultural environment, I intend to add value to Africa and Africans with my works.”
“I’m greatly inspired by events I happen upon on my daily travails. I visualize my most innermost feelings and let out my inherent desires. There’s magic in our heart/mind, we can achieve a lot when we let it out.”
